    Drifting, Favorite Version:
    8/2/2003 Horning’s Hideout – North Plains, OR
Part of the “Dream Dance” Set, while the tune played, people dressed as whirling dervishes swirled around a humongous octopus puppet made from an enormous helium ballon and a person operating each tentacle. They danced the octopus back and forth in front of the stage, the tentacles moving about… You can see a photo at <http://www.grasshopper.net/sci/scihornings.htm>.

I know there are some other strong versions of this tune and I’ll try to remember the dates and edit my post in the future…

I’m gonna throw in a plug for 10/29/02 Rimac Auditorium, San Diego. This was a sleeper show, and man, they just blew it away on a Tuesday night show–Sweet Melinda was a highlight!

    Sweet Melinda, Favorite Version:
    7/24/2003, San Francisco, CA.
The “Knot Jam” within the song is beautiful, aching, then scorching!

Second Favorite: 3/22/2003, Denver, CO, with Billy Kreutzmann guesting on drums. Phat rhythm section there, no doubt.

My favorite version is from my first show. A deeply funky So What inside a Rollover Sandwich. It has a four minute lead-up with Kang playing through his envelope filter and octaver, then about two minutes of the head, and then Kang plays the blues! Followed by creative jamming, Kyle on crazy synth and hints at Galactic before hitting the reprise of Rollover!

Razz my favorite version of smile would have to be the opener on 11/17/00 tabernacle, it just sounds absolutely perfect.

    Smile, Favorite Version:
    3/4/2000, Wilma Theatre, Missoula, MT
Dedicated to Dylan and Danni, who were married during the song at this show. A very happy rendition. I also agree totally with Howard’s comment below, about the 3/21/03 Denver version.

i have to second the 2/5/00 version..the jam into water is one of the most amazing things i’ve heard this band do…

another one of my faves is 4/23/02 pompano beach,FL…this was my first one and goes from blue bossa > jellyfish > black clouds to close the show (BLCL sandwhiches the whole show)

2/18/2000, Fillmore, Denver. The outro-jam is winding tunnel of insanity, I didn’t know Kang’s mandolin could make those sounds–a hollow, distorted howling thing, a passionate, crazed, inspired sound.

11/27/1999 Vic Theatre – Chicago, IL also has a huge Blue Bossa (and the first Rivertrance, BTW).

i’ll have to check that one out… evan,i love your descriptions Smile

one of my faves is 8/21/04 Telluride. the drums are kickin a crazy dance beat while billy plays the liftoff part (i always picture the spaceship takeoff from evolution). i wasn’t there but have friends who told me they got sucked into oblivion for this one.

10/31/04 halloween in madison version was pretty nuts too with the crazy halloween theme jam. after the howard jam in set 2 i knew it was coming as 3rd set opener.

i think they found the perfect spot for howard (set 2 opener). they seem to like it there, considering they did it 3 times this tour.it’s a perfect way to get everyone channeled back in.

The date should be 10/19/02. My birthday show and yes it is a smoking howard. Where the hell did that jam come from?
